About two years ago I was struggling with wanting to go deeper with my prayer life but lacked the fervor it took to get there. I thought about reading a book about prayer to motivate me and light a fire, but the problem was I had already read so many books about prayer; I just needed to actually pray already! But as I was looking through books about prayer I came across Fervent, by Priscilla Shirer. This book was strikingly different because I saw that it wasn’t a book about prayer but it was a book of prayer.
"BUT THIS AIN'T NO PHYSICAL BATTLE WE'RE DEALING WITH, NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU MAY WISH IT TO BE, NO MATTER HOW MUCH BETTER YOU'D FEEL IF LIFE WAS ALL FIVE-SENSES AND MANAGEABLE. WE ARE IN A SPIRITUAL WAR, SO WE NEED SPIRITUAL WEAPONS."
-PRISCILLA SHIRER, FERVENT
What makes this a book of prayer is that each chapter guides you through creating and crafting specialized prayer strategies that are specific for the areas of your life and faith that need to be undergirded. I’ve strongly believe prayer is one of our most powerful weapons in our battle against our flesh and the enemy but I was unsure how to take that fight to the next level. This book encouraged my prayer life to go there.
Priscilla begins with the basic principles of prayer and regaining your passion for it and appreciation of it. She then continues to the heart of the book where she practically guides us in writing down our own prayers for ten different areas of life: our focus, our identity, our family, our past, our fears, our purity, our pressures, our heart, our relationships, and our hurts. I finished each chapter feeling armed to battle in prayer and strengthened to pray longer than I had before.
I NO LONGER FEEL LIKE MY PRAYER LIFE IS LIKE RANDOMLY SHOOTING DARTS HOPING TO LAND ON A TARGET, BUT I NOW SEE MY PRAYER LIFE AS A STRATEGIC BATTLE PLAN THAT IS TARGETED, SPECIFIC, AND INTENTIONAL.
What made this book reignite a greater fire for my prayer life is because it is infused with Scripture. I aligned my prayers under the Word of God and allowed The Holy Spirit to infuse His power, through His Word, into my prayers. At the back of the book Priscilla includes tear-out prayer cards to write our prayers down as a means of visually and verbally bringing them to life. By the end of the book I filled up all the prayer cards and posted them in my closet. They became daily reminders of some of my deepest prayers and heartfelt longings. Some prayers have been answered, others are yet to be fulfilled; but I love that I have created a memorial of prayers to bring to the Lord's remembrance everyday.
When I ran out of prayer cards I simply made my own! I made index card-sized cards to write prayers, scriptures, and notes about what God is speaking to me. Now I want to share the prayer cards I made with you in hopes that you, too, will be encouraged to step outside of your normal prayer routine and try something new. There is one for every day of the week; simply click to download, right click to save, and print. Voila! now you can write away! Use them as prayer cards, journal entry prompts, notes to friends, scripture cards, or goal reminders for the day.
"CALL UPON ME AND COME PRAY TO ME, AND I WILL LISTEN TO YOU. YOU WILL SEEK ME AND FIND ME WHEN YOU SEEK ME WITH ALL OF YOUR HEART."
